Not to be outdone by itself, Google is weaving new features into another one of its valuable tools, Google My Business Insights – and it is something that digital marketers have been looking forward to for a really long time.

Of course, you can trust your friendly neighborhood digital marketing catalysts here at Cobalt Digital Marketing to dissect this announcement and get down to the real nitty-gritty of how Google intends to clarify your business’s online profile.

What Did Google Mention About Google My Business?

About a month ago, Google announced over Twitter that they launched Subjective Attributes in an effort to provide “…more information in your insights tab! Customers of restaurants and cafes can submit subjective attributes to help you and your customers.”

Great! But what exactly does any of that mean?

Attributes, in general, are statements that provide some sort of insight about your business. Regarding the announcement, Google My Business (GMB) has added another type of attribute that is now available for your viewing pleasure in the Insight’s tab:

  1. Objective Attributes
  2. Subjective Attributes

So, what do these two attributes entail? Glad you asked.

Objective Attributes

Objective Attributes are more like business “facts” that the owner of the business—or listing manager—can control.

All GMB managers have access to this capability, adding and editing to their heart’s content, so long as what they are creating is factual and objective. A good example of an Objective Attribute would be a listing such as what a restaurant serves during happy hour or that they accept credit cards. Usually, this information can be found when a customer is looking up the restaurant’s information on Google Maps.

Objective Attributes don’t fall solely within the realm of managers and owners, however. With enough supporting input from users, Google may “suggest” an attribute in an effort to make sure your business is being properly represented.

Going along with the restaurant example, other types of Objective Attributes you could potentially find for this type of business could be:

  • Local ingredients
  • Salad bar
  • Spicy food
  • Outdoor seating
  • Vegetarian options
  • Craft beer

Of course, Objective Attributes will differ depending on the type of business you run.

Subjective Attributes (a.k.a. Google My Business’ New Addition to the Insight Tab)

If Objective Attributes were GMB’s yin, Subjective Attributes are GMB’s yang. Subjective Attributes are under user control via answers submitted through Google Maps. Of course, these attributes are more opinionated than Objective Attributes would be.

It bears repeating one more time: Subjective Attributes ARE NOT controlled by the business. That means that your business must be performing at optimum levels if you are to win over the general public. Run your business focusing on customer service first and foremost.

But I know what you’re thinking. Since Subjective Attributes rely on user-submitted content, can’t my business’s reputation be harmed by non-factual content submitted by a disgruntled employee, customer, or general troll.

Well, it would be hard for a vindictive user to do so. GMB asks specific questions about your business to users that are generating Subjective Attributes and provide either a “Yes, No, or I don’t know” type answer.

Of course, customers can go a little deeper in the answering process by selecting “More Choices.” The system can also ask other questions that aren’t listed as Objective Attributes, but overall, the tool is intended to keep harmful users from spreading lies.

So What Can I Do to Foster The Attributes That I Want My Business to be Known For?

There are a few things that you can do to make sure that your business is being represented accurately, including:

  1. Do a little homework – Check out the types of questions that are being asked by GMB Insights on the daily and add new questions to your master list.
  2. Do a little editing – Edit your business description within GMB to include the Objective Attributes that you want to highlight. It would be in your best interests to do this with your GMB Posts as well.
  3. Take it offline – Something like a simple sign on the door informing incoming customers about a particular perk related to your Objective Attributes could sink into the customer’s mind to be used later if they do rate your business.

Google keeps us learning but we do it for your benefit.

Don’t you want a digital marketing team that stays on top of current SEO trends and updates that can help make your job as a business owner easier?

Facebook Is Making Changes, But Reddit Is Stepping In to Help Marketers

Facebook giveth and Facebook taketh away.

Facebook is attempting to steer their Timeline feature back to focus on family and friends; the cornerstone of what first made Facebook so popular. That means that companies that have been advertising on the platform for years may now start feeling the heat – and we don’t mean in a Texas summer kind of way.

Of course, your expert catalysts at Cobalt Digital Marketing are preparing for the change and have a few ideas on how to cover lost ground.

What’s Up With Facebook?

Mark Zuckerberg posted an announcement a few months back on the changes they were intending to make…and the reviews were mixed.

Essentially, the social media giant is looking to eventually decrease the visibility that businesses, brands, and media have on our timelines. This is great news for users interested in their personal relationships but a bit of bad news for those of us marketing on Facebook looking to introduce interesting products and services to potential clients.

In essence, it’s going to make marketing on Facebook a little harder than it already is.

Of course, you’ve got to think on your feet to survive this digital Darwinism age. Lucky for us, there may just be another way.

[bctt tweet=”92% of #Reddit users made an #online #purchase within the last 6 months #CobaltDigitalMarketing” username=””]

Enter Reddit: The Front Page of the Internet

Reddit is expected to pick up where Facebook is leaving off. Almost a year ago, Reddit decided to give their desktop website a much-needed facelift, something Reddit hadn’t done since its conception 10 years ago.

The focus was to make the site more navigable for new and veteran visitors alike. This advantage, however, is making it easier for businesses to reach out and engage with their customers. How?

Through Reddit Profile Pages. Recently, Reddit changed up how businesses can create content without committing the cardinal sin of spamming the Reddit community with sales or offers.

With Profile Pages, businesses now have the opportunity to create a brand page where they can post their own content to, grow a following, and achieve goals similar to what could be done on Facebook.

At the same time, people who follow you have the ability to view your profile, the content you post, and the comments you’ve posted to other theme-based categories, a.k.a. subreddits. The good thing is, your content—if it gets popular enough through upvoting—can make it to the coveted front page of Reddit, the perfect place to get plenty of brand exposure.

This is a less intrusive way to get your brand out there, helping you build up a community that is interested in your product. A good example to emulate when it comes to building a profile would be with Nintendo’s Reddit Profile Page.

How to Safely Gain Exposure

Upvoting is important to you gaining more exposure, and in order to earn them, you have to provide top-quality content that abides by the rules of Reddit and its subreddits while meeting the community’s expectations. One of the best ways that marketing agencies do this is through the subreddit “Ask Me Anything,” also known as an “AMA”.

In an AMA, you are opening yourself to any kind of question that can come from pretty much anybody. Within an AMA, don’t be surprised that someone digs really deep to ask you a question in an effort to stump your brand. Honesty and accountability are the best plan of action when it comes to AMAs. The last thing you would want to have happen would be like the Woody Harrelson/“Rampart” incident.

The hard lesson Harrelson probably learned that day was that valuable content and plenty of time to answer users’ questions go a long way in Reddit. In fact, it has turned many a user into the “go-to” person when a certain topic comes up.

User Unidan was pretty much a household name when it came to anything biology, and he would pop up in random biology threads from time to time to answer any inquiries. He was known as the “excited biologist,” as he enthusiastically answered these questions with illuminating answers. That is, until it was discovered that he was gaming the upvoting system and was quickly, and permanently, exiled from the Reddit limelight.

In Reddit, once you have broken the community’s trust, you’re pretty much done. If you do decide to host an AMA, do an AMAA instead (Ask Me Almost Anything). There, you have a little more leeway to avoid answering questions that may seem personal or off the marketing course that you would like to take. Granted, you may have a smaller audience with an AMAA, however.

[bctt tweet=”The US provides 62% of #Reddit traffic. #CobaltDigitalMarketing” username=””]

The Benefits of Using Reddit

The majority of users — over 78 percent — have a college education and many of them are privy to pushing through marketing rhetoric. That’s why in order to truly succeed with Reddit, you have to become a Reddit user, not just a brand on a social media website.

That means engaging with the community as you would with other human beings outside of your business—of course, with proper decorum, enthusiasm, and professionalism.

Over the years, Reddit seems to be more accommodating to businesses as:

  • They have relaxed their 10 percent rule. – This rule would only allow self-promotion from your own website to about 10 percent of your posts. It has since been relaxed, allowing for a little more website showcasing, so long as quality is the main focus.
  • Submission time has been reduced. – When you submit a post on Reddit, it is sent to a moderator that okays it for public view. Now, around 90 percent of content that is posted is streamlined through without moderator intervention, unless you break Reddit trust and a moderator has to remove your post.
  • Brands are more acceptable now. – Brands are encouraged to have meaningful dialogue and interactions with Redditors. Remember, Reddit isn’t against marketing, so long as you don’t break their trust. Be informative, be enthusiastic, and be professional.
  • The new peer to peer chat gives you more interaction with your customers. – Reddit is now more interested in creating a social aspect and functionality to help foster direct engagements – something marketers should love.
  • The new profile pages give brands the flexibility needed. The profile pages won’t change a user’s interaction with the website. Profile pages allow businesses to create their own content under their own rules, not under some obscure subreddit rules.

In essence, Reddit is making a change to help brands fill the social media marketing void that other platforms are either missing—or ditching—while not making much of an impact to the everyday user’s experience.

That’s a win-win for everyone.

Let Cobalt Digital Marketing help you stay up-to-date on all the latest changes in the digital marketing world.

Let’s face it. The other social media giants are beginning to lose a lot of traffic, but Reddit is growing and has been for over 10 years. And in order for your business to survive the ever-changing world of digital marketing, you’re gonna need a digital marketing agency that can roll with the punches.

You need a digital marketing agency that relentlessly researches digital marketing trends so that your website will reap the benefits. You need Cobalt Digital Marketing.

A Need for Speed: Google Rolls Out Its Update

Posted on Friday, July 13th, 2018 at 10:21 pm

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.22″][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.74″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”]

Earlier this year we touched on Google’s plan to update their ranking factors to include the speed that it takes to load a web page on a particular site. Well, that update has arrived!

But not all websites are being affected and the catalysts at Cobalt Digital Marketing want to tell you why. Dig this.

A Quick Refresher On The Speed Update

Google has been working overtime the last few years to have their search system index mobile sites first and to implement page speed metrics into mobile searches. The move was made to keep up with how popular mobile marketing has become and to help foster it to greater heights.

This update was a change to the Google algorithm designed for mobile search specifically. So in essence, this change will only affect mobile-optimized searches and not desktop. That doesn’t mean, however, that if your website is optimized for mobile, but loads slowly, that you will be at the bottom of the rankings list.

Google has made it abundantly clear that quality content is still the name of the game, and even if you have a slow load speed, having great content could still help your rankings.

But what does this all really mean for your business?

[bctt tweet=”The avg amount of time it takes to load a mobile landing page is 15 seconds #Google #Need4Speed #CobaltDigitalMarketing” username=””]

The Down Low

Say that you are shopping for swimming trunks for your annual family trip. You pull out your smartphone, tap on Chrome, and plug in your search terms. You tap on the first retailer listed on the SERP.

It takes a few seconds for the business’ masthead to load, but you still don’t see anything price-wise, much less how the swimming trunks actually look like.

It. Is. Taking. Forever. To. Load.

After 10 seconds, you tap the back button with a sigh and scroll down the SERP for another retailer.

Now, when you are a digital marketer, that is a cardinal sin. Why? Not only did you lose a potential customer and revenue, your bounce rate went up because the potential customer, well, bounced.

Although bounce rate is still up in the air on how it affects your ranking, in this particular scenario, it could hurt your rankings. Google knows when someone is accessing your website for valuable content, and if they leave shortly after and click or tap elsewhere on the same SERP, that could signal to Google that your content is low value. It’s no secret that Google is putting content quality on the top of their ranking signals.

Isn’t there something that can be down to lower the page loading time so that potential customers don’t leave before your content is loaded? At Cobalt Digital Marketing, we won’t leave you hanging. Here’s what you can do to help your page load faster for your potential customers.

[bctt tweet=”According to @Google if a page loads between 1-10 seconds, the probability of bounce increases by 123% #DontLetUrBuyersBounce #CobaltDigitalMarketing ” username=””]

What You Can Do

Being the most inclusive service for your investment, we here at Cobalt Digital Marketing also have our very own speed test tool that you can use to test out how fast of a response time your site generates and can then make necessary adjustments. Just copy and paste your website’s address into our nifty search box and within seconds you will have a detailed analysis of what works, what needs to be improved, and what errors need to be fixed.

You can also use some of these other free tools listed below to evaluate the speed of your site:

  1. PageSpeed Insights
  2. Yslow
  3. WebPageTest
  4. Webmaster Tools
  5. Cobalt Digital Marketing’s Test My Site

Afterward, take the appropriate actions to fix high load times by:

  1. Enabling Compression – Use file compression programs to reduce the size of your JavaScript, HTML, or CSS files if they are larger than 150 bytes.
  2. Managing Browser Caching – Use Yslow to check for expiration dates set on your browser cache and set the expiration date for whatever you desire. Browser caches store a lot of information so that when visitors return, they won’t have to reload all that data again.
  3. Reducing Redirections – The more your customer is redirected to another page, the more time they wait loading.
  4. Optimizing Your Code – Remove unnecessary spaces, commas, other characters from your code, code comments, and unused code to dramatically increase page load speed.
  5. Using a Content Distribution Network – Multiple servers that have multiple copies of your web page can help local customers connect to your page quicker.
  6. Improve Server Response Times – Look for places where performance suffers like slow database queries or slow routing and remedy it. Keep in mind that your server response time is dependent on:
    1. The amount of traffic
    2. The number of resources each page uses
    3. Server’s software
    4. Your hosting solution
  1. Optimizing Your Images – Make sure that your images aren’t bigger than they should be. Save them in the right format as well—rule of thumb: PNG for images with less than 16 colors, JPEG for photos. Make sure they are compressed for the web.

At Cobalt Digital Marketing, we make sure to stay up-to-date on all the digital marketing news that can benefit your business.

Google is Once Again Making Some Changes and You’re Going to Benefit From It

Posted on Tuesday, July 3rd, 2018 at 3:31 pm

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ _builder_version=”3.22″][et_pb_row _builder_version=”3.25″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ _builder_version=”3.25″ custom_padding=”|||” custom_padding__hover=”|||”][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.0.74″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat”]Rebranding. Prince did it. Madonna too. Heck, even Garth Brooks did it briefly by donning a wig that had bangs, a little eyeliner, and a soul patch to become Chris Gaines.

When done correctly, rebranding can be used as an effective strategy to bring life back to something that may be going a little stale. It’s is also a great tool to simplify a product.

In Google’s case, it’s the latter.

Google is looking to change AdWords and DoubleClick into something more streamlined, and your catalysts at Cobalt Digital Marketing are observing this change to see how it will benefit digital marketers the world over.

Here’s what we’ve learned.

For Starters…

It is important to address that even though these advertising products are changing, not much about them is actually changing. Think of this as a facelift and not an all-out butchering.

Due to how the market is moving— mobile —Google is reorganizing (and renaming) their advertising products to reflect what they are currently capable of and where they see the industry growing toward.

And they want to do that by establishing three primary brands: Google Ads, Google Marketing Platform, and Google Ad Manager.

[bctt tweet=”#Google advertising products will be established into three primary brands: Google Ads, Google Marketing Platform, and Google Ad Manager #CobaltDigitalMarketing” username=””]

Google Ads

With its humble launch in 2000, AdWords was a simple platform that ran text-based ads on Desktop Search. Now, AdWords supports a bevy of different ad formats like text, shopping, video, display, and app install. These have even spread far into Search, Gmail, YouTube, and Maps.

So if it ain’t broke, why fix it? The heads of Google feel that AdWords only showcases a small portion of what their ad products are truly capable of. By rebranding it as Google Ads, the goal is to make it apparent that this ad product is comprised of many other formats of advertising.

While this simplification may seem in name only, Google has announced Smart Campaigns. This (somewhat) automated advertising campaign system will use machine learning to help small businesses that lack the time or resources to run an effective digital advertising campaign.

Google Marketing Platform

Grab one part DoubleClick advertising products and combine with one part Analytics 360, and you’ve got Google Marketing Platform. This combination helps enterprise customers plan, buy, measure, and optimize digital media buys all in one convenient place.

The goal of the unification of these products is to give digital marketers the means to create audiences, activate them, and analyze the results without having to go through a whole process of navigating between two or more products.

Display & Video 360 will merge Google’s other enterprise display advertising products including:

  • DoubleClick Bid Manager
  • DoubleClick Campaign Manager
  • DoubleClick Studio
  • Google Audience Center 360

That’s not all. Google’s enterprise-level search management platform DoubleClick Search will become Search Ads 360, while Google Data Studio, Surveys 360, Optimize 360, and Tag Manager 360 will be incorporated into the Google Marketing Platform.

Google Marketing Platform will also be designed with user choice in mind, giving marketers the ability to choose from over 100 existing integrations with third-party measurement solutions, ad exchanges, and other products too.

[bctt tweet=”In 2007, @Google outbid @Microsoft @Yahoo and @AOL to acquire @doubleclick for $3.1 billion. #MoneyWellSpent #CobaltDigitalMarketing” username=””]

Google Ad Manager

Lastly, DoubleClick for Publishers (DFP) and DoubleClick Ad Exchange (AdX) will be combined into Google Ad Manager. AdX was launched by Google to aid large publishers in selling advertising inventory in real time.

In essence, Google Ad Manager will help publishers monetize new areas where people are engaged such as live streams, connected TVs, mobile games, Accelerated Mobile Pages, YouTube, and Apple News to name a few.

Google’s rebranding rolls out around mid-July and continues on throughout the next few months. Cobalt Digital will keep you up-to-date on all the exciting news.
